Pygurus marmonti is an extinct Jurassic echinoid species known from fossil deposits approximately 145–200 million years old. Its test exhibits pentaradial symmetry expressed as a distinct five-pointed star pattern, a defining feature of echinoid morphology. Fossil specimens recovered from Madagascar frequently show excellent preservation due to favorable sedimentary conditions.
These sand dollar sea urchins inhabited shallow marine substrates and were adapted for burrowing within soft sediment. Following burial, their shells underwent fossilization through mineral replacement and compression, resulting in detailed, durable fossils. Pygurus marmonti provides important insight into Jurassic marine ecosystems while remaining highly valued as a collectible fossil specimen.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:
Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Madagascar do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
