Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins are marine invertebrates that can be found across nearly all major ocean habitats—from the poles to the equator and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. Today, there are around 800 living species, and the group has an extensive fossil record dating back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the term Echinoid is derived from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these creatures were covered with movable spines that offered protection and aided in movement.
