Hypacrosaurus Dinosaur Collection
Hypacrosaurus means ‘near the highest lizard'. In this context, the ‘lizard’ refers to the dinosaur Tyrannosaurus, one of the largest dinosaurs of late Cretaceous North America, though only about a third larger than Hypacrosaurus in its largest individuals—Tyrannosaurus reaching twelve meters and Hypacrosaurus nine meters. Interestingly, Hypacrosaurus and similar dinosaurs may have been prey for Tyrannosaurus and related genera like Albertosaurus. Evidence for this includes a large bite wound on the back of an Edmontosaurus, which closely resembles a Tyrannosaurus mouth. Since the bones in the wound healed afterward, it indicates the Edmontosaurus was alive when bitten, showing that Tyrannosaurus often preyed on living animals rather than just scavenging carcasses.
