Tetragramma marticense sea urchins are a group of marine invertebrates found in nearly every ocean habitat—from polar waters to tropical seas, and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. Today, about 800 living species exist, but their lineage stretches back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period, leaving behind a rich fossil record. Commonly referred to as “sea biscuits,” their name derives from the Latin word echinus, meaning “pickle.” In life, these creatures were covered with movable spines that offered protection and assisted in movement across the seafloor.
