Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins are a group of marine invertebrates that can be found in nearly every major marine environment today—from the poles to the equator and from shallow coastal waters to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are about 800 living species, and this group has an extensive fossil record that dates back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the name Echinoid is derived from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these fascinating creatures were covered with movable spines that provided both protection and mobility along the ocean floor.
