Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins belong to the Echinoidea class of marine invertebrates, a group that has thrived in diverse marine environments from the poles to the equator and at depths exceeding 5,000 meters. With approximately 800 living species, sea urchins have a rich fossil record extending back about 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Members of this genus are often referred to as “sea biscuits” due to their rounded, flattened shapes. The term “Echinoid” is derived from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these echinoids were covered with movable spines that aided in locomotion and served as protection from predators.
