Tetragramma marticense Sea Urchin belongs to the echinoid class of marine invertebrates, a group that includes modern sea urchins and sand dollars. Echinoids have an extensive fossil record dating back to the Late Ordovician Period, approximately 450 million years ago. Today, around 800 living species occupy diverse marine environments worldwide, ranging from polar regions to equatorial waters and from shallow intertidal zones to deep-sea habitats. The genus Tetragramma is often referred to as a “sea biscuit,” derived from its rounded test shape. In life, these organisms possessed movable spines that provided defense and assisted in locomotion across the ocean floor.
