Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins belong to a diverse group of marine invertebrates that can be found in nearly every major ocean habitat—from the poles to the equator and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. Today, around 800 living species exist, and the group boasts an extensive fossil record dating back approximately 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the name Echinoid comes from the Latin word meaning “pickle.” When alive, these ancient sea urchins were covered with movable spines that offered protection and assisted in locomotion across the seafloor.
