Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins belong to a group of marine invertebrates that today inhabit nearly every major marine environment—from the poles to the equator, and from shallow intertidal zones to ocean depths exceeding 5,000 meters. With around 800 living species, these fascinating creatures have an extensive fossil record that dates back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period.
Commonly known as “Sea Biscuits,” the name Echinoid comes from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these animals were covered with movable spines that provided both protection and mobility across the sea floor.
