Clypeaster altus Sea Urchins are marine invertebrates found across nearly all major oceanic habitats, from the poles to the equator and from shallow intertidal zones to depths over 5,000 meters. With roughly 800 species alive today, they have a rich fossil record that dates back about 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Often called “Sea Biscuits,” their name, Echinoid, comes from Latin and means "pickle.” When alive, these animals were covered with movable spines that provided protection and helped them move along the sea floor.
