Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins are a group of marine invertebrates that can be found today in nearly every major marine environment—from the poles to the equator, and from intertidal zones to ocean depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are about 800 living species, and the group boasts a rich and detailed fossil record dating back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the name Echinoid comes from the Latin word meaning “pickle.” When alive, these fascinating creatures were covered with movable spines that provided both protection and aid in locomotion.
