Goniopygus sp. Sea Urchins are a group of marine invertebrates that can be found in nearly every major marine habitat today—from the poles to the equator and from shallow intertidal zones to depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are about 800 living species, and the group has an extensive fossil record that dates back roughly 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period. Commonly referred to as “Sea Biscuits,” the term Echinoid is derived from the Latin word for “pickle.” When alive, these fascinating creatures were covered with movable spines that offered protection and helped them move along the seafloor.
