The Pygurus marmonti Sand Dollar, also known as the Fossil Sea Urchin, belongs to the echinoid family and lived during the Jurassic Period, around 145–200 million years ago. It is easily recognized by its distinctive five-ray star pattern. Fossil specimens from Madagascar are often polished to reveal their fine details and symmetrical beauty.
These fossils represent impressions or molds of ancient sea urchins that once lived on the ocean floor. After the animal’s death, sediments such as sand, silt, and clay buried the shell, preserving its shape. Over millions of years, these layers compressed and solidified into rock—typically limestone or shale—creating a lasting cast of the original organism. Highly valued by collectors and paleontologists alike, these fossils capture both the artistry and history of prehistoric marine life.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:
Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Madagascar do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
