Upper Cretaceous, 96 Million Years Old
In 2018, paleontologists Nick Longrich, David Martill, and Brian Andres identified a new pteranodontid species named Tethydraco Regalis from the Upper Cretaceous Couche III deposits at the Sidi Daoui phosphate mines near Khouribga, Morocco. These deposits date to the final million years of the Mesozoic Era and include some of the last known pterosaur species before the K-Pg extinction event. Tethydraco is primarily defined by an isolated humerus serving as the holotype, along with several associated limb bones such as ulnae, a femur, and an articulated femur and tibia. Its name means “royal Tethys dragon,” referring to the ancient Tethys Ocean that once separated northern Africa from Eurasia.
