Upper Cretaceous, 96 Million Years Old

In 2018, bold paleontologists Nick Longrich, David Martill, and Brian Andres unveiled a brand-new species, Tethydraco Regalis, a fierce pteranodontid from the Upper Cretaceous Couche III layers in Morocco's Sidi Daoui phosphate mines. These ancient rocks, from the final million years of the Mesozoic Era, hold the remains of some of the last flying reptiles before the devastating K-Pg extinction. This daring discovery centers on a lone humerus as the holotype, accompanied by several limb bones like ulnae, a femur, and a connected femur and tibia. Its name, “royal Tethys dragon,” pays tribute to the mighty ancient Tethys Ocean that once divided northern Africa and Eurasia.
