Recognized as the original raptor, Dromaeosaurus played a foundational role in paleontology. Discovered on the south bank of the Red Deer River in 1914 by Barnum Brown and named in 1922, it later gave its name to the entire Dromaeosauridae family. All later raptors, including more famous genera, trace their classification back to this species.

Physically, Dromaeosaurus differed from most of its relatives. It had a short, heavy skull, deep jaw, and large serrated teeth showing significant wear, indicating powerful crushing and tearing capabilities. Its build suggests a muscular and fairly massive animal for its size.

The dinosaur’s tail, stiffened by a lattice of bony rods but flexible near the hips, likely helped with balance while running. Large eyes indicate sharp vision, and its hooked toe claws, though shorter than in some raptors, still provided a lethal advantage. With grasping hands and a flexible neck, it was well-equipped for predation.

Whether hunter, scavenger, or both, Dromaeosaurus remains one of the most scientifically significant small carnivorous dinosaurs of the Late Cretaceous period.
