Upper Cretaceous, 96 Million Years Old
In 2018, paleontologists Nick Longrich, David Martill, and Brian Andres introduced Tethydraco Regalis, a newly identified pteranodontid species from the Upper Cretaceous Couche III layers of the Sidi Daoui phosphate mines near Khouribga, Morocco. These sedimentary deposits date to the final million years of the Mesozoic Era, capturing some of the last pterosaur species existing before the K-Pg Extinction. The species is primarily defined by an isolated humerus serving as the holotype, along with additional limb elements including two ulnae, a femur, and an articulated femur and tibia. Its name, meaning “royal Tethys dragon,” pays homage to the ancient Tethys Ocean that once separated northern Africa and Eurasia.
