Upper Cretaceous, 96 Million Years Old
In 2018, paleontologists Nick Longrich, David Martill, and Brian Andres identified a new pteranodontid species, Tethydraco Regalis, from Upper Cretaceous Couche III deposits at the Sidi Daoui phosphate mines near Khouribga, Morocco. These strata, dating to the final million years of the Mesozoic Era, capture some of the last pterosaur species before the K-Pg Extinction. Tethydraco is defined by an isolated humerus serving as the holotype, along with several associated limb bones, including ulnae, a femur, and an articulated femur and tibia. Its name means “royal Tethys dragon,” referencing the ancient Tethys Ocean that once separated northern Africa from Eurasia.
