Pterosaurs, members of the extinct clade Pterosauria, thrived throughout the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic Era, approximately 228 to 66 million years ago. They represent the earliest vertebrates capable of powered flight. Their wings consisted of a membrane of skin, muscle, and other tissues extending from the ankles to an elongated fourth finger. Early species featured long, fully-toothed jaws and extended tails, while later species had shortened tails and sometimes lacked teeth. Their bones were hollow and filled with air, similar to birds, allowing greater muscle attachment for their weight. Bone walls were often extremely thin, supported by a large, keeled breastbone for flight muscles and an enlarged brain to manage complex flight.
