Pterosaurs were incredible flying reptiles from the extinct group Pterosauria that thrived throughout the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic Era, dating back 228 to 66 million years. They were the first vertebrates to master powered flight, with wings made of skin and muscle membrane stretching from their ankles to an elongated fourth finger. Early species sported long, tooth-filled jaws and long tails, while later ones had shorter tails and sometimes no teeth at all. Their hollow, air-filled bones—similar to birds’—were lightweight yet strong, featuring thin walls, a large keeled breastbone for flight muscle attachment, and a bigger brain to manage complex flying skills.
