Pterosaurs were incredible flying reptiles from the extinct group Pterosauria that thrived across all periods of the Mesozoic Era—Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous—between about 228 and 66 million years ago. They were the very first vertebrates to master powered flight, with wings made from a skin-and-muscle membrane stretching from their ankles to a uniquely elongated fourth finger. Early pterosaurs sported long jaws packed with teeth and lengthy tails, while later species evolved shorter tails and sometimes lost their teeth altogether. Their hollow, air-filled bones, much like those of birds, kept them lightweight yet strong, featuring ultra-thin walls, a pronounced keeled breastbone to anchor flight muscles, and a large brain for precise flight control.
