Pterosaurs were flying reptiles from the extinct group Pterosauria that thrived throughout the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic Era, around 228 to 66 million years ago. They are the earliest known vertebrates to develop powered flight. Their wings were composed of a membrane of skin, muscle, and other tissues that stretched from the ankles to an extended fourth finger. Early species had long, fully toothed jaws and lengthy tails, whereas later species had much shorter tails and some lacked teeth entirely. Their bones were hollow and filled with air, similar to birds, which allowed for greater muscle attachment relative to skeletal weight. Additionally, their bone walls were often very thin, and they possessed a large, keeled breastbone for flight muscle support and an enlarged brain to manage complex flying skills.
