Nanotyrannus, which means 'dwarf tyrant,' is a debated genus of tyrannosaurid dinosaur and might represent a juvenile Tyrannosaurus. It is known from a small skull dating back 72.1 to 66 million years ago. One key difference between Nanotyrannus and Tyrannosaurus rex is that Nanotyrannus had more teeth in both its upper and lower jaws, along with fused bones. Specifically, it had 14 to 15 teeth on each side of the upper jaw and 16 on each side of the lower jaw, while T. rex had 11 to 12 upper and 11 to 14 lower teeth. These dinosaurs likely hunted together in pairs or groups to prey on large herbivores like ceratopsians and hadrosaurs during the Late Cretaceous.
