Perisphinctes Ammonite
Ammonites are among the most iconic and easily recognized fossils, celebrated for their distinctive ribbed, spiral shells. These prehistoric marine creatures inhabited ancient oceans between 240 and 65 million years ago, eventually becoming extinct alongside the dinosaurs.
The name ammonite derives from the Greek ram-horned god Ammon, whose coiled horns resembled the spiral shape of their shells. Belonging to the class Cephalopoda, ammonites were part of a group of skilled marine predators that includes modern octopuses, squids, cuttlefish, and nautiluses.
