Agate describes many forms of banded Chalcedony, a member of the Quartz mineral family. Its name is derived from the Achates River in Sicily, the site of the first Agate discoveries. Typically, Agate displays layered bands or stripes, with some specimens showing distinctive "eye" patterns, color spots, fossilized inclusions, or appearing solid. Often called the Earth’s rainbow, Agate’s concentric bands manifest in nearly every natural color, including a transparent, colorless variety.
Agate has been found alongside Neolithic artifacts and was traditionally used as a healing talisman and decorative item dating back to Babylon. Its therapeutic applications persisted through ancient Greek and Egyptian cultures and extended through Africa, the Middle East, and into Russia. This stone also inspired a famous stone-cutting and polishing craft in Germany, thriving from the 15th to 19th centuries and still practiced today.
