Agate encompasses a wide range of banded Chalcedony varieties within the Quartz family. Its name is derived from the Achates River in Sicily, the site of its initial discovery. Typically presenting layered bands or stripes, certain types feature "eye" patterns, color speckles, fossilized inclusions, or uniform coloration. Referred to as the Earth’s rainbow, Agate’s concentric bands span nearly all terrestrial hues, including colorless forms. Archaeological finds associate Agate with Neolithic artifacts, where it served as healing amulets and decorative items dating back to Babylon. Its therapeutic applications persisted through ancient Greek and Egyptian cultures, extending across Africa, the Middle East, and into Russia. Furthermore, Agate catalyzed a distinguished German stone-cutting and polishing tradition from the 15th to 19th centuries, a craft that remains active today.
