Agate encompasses various forms of banded Chalcedony, a mineral within the Quartz family. Its name derives from the Achates River in Sicily, where it was first discovered. Typically featuring layered bands or stripes, some agates display "eye" patterns, color spots, fossil inclusions, or appear solid. Known as the Earth’s rainbow, agate’s concentric bands appear in almost every natural color, including transparent varieties. Agate has been found alongside Neolithic artifacts and was historically used as healing amulets and decorative items since Babylon. Its medicinal applications continued in ancient Greek and Egyptian cultures and spread across Africa, the Middle East, and Russia. Additionally, agate inspired a renowned stone cutting and polishing tradition in Germany from the 15th to 19th centuries that persists today.
