Upper Cretaceous 99-65 Million Years old

Pycnodontiforms were an extinct group of ray-finned fishes (class Actinopterygii) that included the genus Pycnodus. They were especially common in the Jurassic seas, thriving between 200 and 146 million years ago. Typically small to medium in size, these fish had deep, laterally compressed bodies with an almost circular outline. Pycnodontiforms primarily inhabited shallow marine environments, where their specialized jaws with round, flattened teeth made them well-suited for crushing hard-shelled prey. Some species are also thought to have lived in rivers, feeding on mollusks, crustaceans, and other similar organisms.

Found in rock formations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America.
