Upper Cretaceous 99-65 Million Years old
Pycnodontiforms were extinct ray-finned fishes from the class Actinopterygii, including the genus Pycnodus, that thrived in Jurassic seas between 200 and 146 million years ago. These fish were small to medium in size, characterized by their laterally compressed bodies and nearly circular shape. They primarily inhabited shallow marine environments and had specialized jaws equipped with rounded, flattened teeth designed for crushing food. Some species are believed to have lived in rivers, feeding on mollusks and crustaceans.
Found in rock formations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America.
