Upper Cretaceous 99-65 Million Years old
Pycnodontiforms were extinct ray-finned fishes from the class Actinopterygii, including the genus Pycnodus, that inhabited Jurassic seas between 200 and 146 million years ago. These fish were small to medium in size, featuring laterally compressed bodies with a nearly circular shape. They primarily lived in shallow marine environments and had specialized jaws with rounded, flattened teeth designed for crushing food. Some species adapted to river habitats and likely fed on mollusks and crustaceans.
Found in rock formations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America.
