Upper Cretaceous 99-65 Million Years old
Pycnodontiforms were extinct ray-finned fishes that belonged to the class Actinopterygii and included the genus Pycnodus. These fish were common in Jurassic seas between 200 and 146 million years ago. They ranged from small to medium size and had bodies that were laterally compressed with a nearly circular shape. Pycnodontiforms mainly inhabited shallow marine environments. Their jaws featured round, flattened teeth specifically adapted to crush their food. Some species also lived in rivers, where they likely fed on mollusks and crustaceans.
Found in rock formations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America.
