Upper Cretaceous 99-65 Million Years old
Pycnodontiforms, extinct members of the Actinopterygii class including the genus Pycnodus, thrived in Jurassic seas between 200 and 146 million years ago. These fish, ranging from small to medium size, exhibited laterally compressed bodies with nearly circular profiles. Predominantly found in shallow marine environments, their distinctive jaws bore rounded, flattened teeth perfectly adapted for crushing prey. Certain species may have inhabited freshwater rivers, subsisting on mollusks and crustaceans.
Found in rock formations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America.
