Upper Cretaceous 99-65 Million Years old
Pycnodontiforms were an extinct group of ray-finned fishes from the class Actinopterygii, including the genus Pycnodus, that thrived in Jurassic seas between 200 and 146 million years ago. These small to medium-sized fish featured laterally compressed bodies with nearly circular shapes. Primarily dwelling in shallow marine waters, they possessed specialized jaws with round, flattened teeth perfectly suited for crushing their prey. Some species even adapted to river environments, likely feeding on mollusks and crustaceans, making them fascinating examples of ancient aquatic life.
Found in rock formations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America.
