Upper Cretaceous 99-65 Million Years old
Pycnodontiforms, belonging to the class Actinopterygii and including the genus Pycnodus, were extinct fishes that thrived in Jurassic seas from around 200 to 146 million years ago. These fish were typically small to medium in size with bodies that were laterally compressed and nearly circular in shape. They predominantly inhabited shallow marine environments. Their jaws featured distinctive, round, and flattened teeth, ideally suited for crushing their food. Some species also lived in river habitats, where they likely fed on mollusks and crustaceans.
Found in rock formations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America.
