Cretaceous Age through to the Eocene Age
Crocodilians represent one of nature's most enduring lineages, with three living families—crocodiles, alligators, and caimans—plus gharials distributed across tropical and subtropical regions within 4,000 kilometers of the equator. Distinguishing features separate these reptiles: crocodiles display narrow snouts with visible lower teeth and a distinctive notch for the fourth tooth, while alligators possess wider, rounded snouts with concealed lower teeth. Gharials are unmistakable with their elongated, slender snouts. Having persisted for 240 million years—predating dinosaurs by 25 million years and birds and mammals by 100 million—crocodiles maintain the ancestral body plan that has proven evolutionarily successful. Ancient specimens reached lengths of 40 feet. Modern cladistic analysis recognizes crocodiles as the closest living relatives to dinosaurs, sharing anatomical characteristics including bird-like hip bone arrangement and socketed teeth. This specimen offers a tangible connection to this ancient reptilian legacy.
