Sarcosuchus Imperator ('Greek for "flesh crocodile"') is an extinct crocodylomorph species that lived around 122 to 112 million years ago, during the Cretaceous Period. Its remains were unearthed during several expeditions led by French paleontologist Albert-Félix de Lapparent in the Sahara Desert between 1966 and 1970. These remains included skull fragments, vertebrae, teeth, and scutes. In 1964, the French CEA discovered an almost complete skull in Niger, but it was only in 1997 and 2012 that most of its anatomy was understood. Sarcosuchus imperator was a large crocodile relative, with adults estimated to reach 9 to 9.5 meters (29–31 feet) in length and weigh between 3.5 and 4.5 tons. It had telescoped eyes and a long snout, which together accounted for 75% of the skull's length. Each side of the upper jaw had 35 teeth, while the lower jaw had 31 teeth per side. The upper jaw was notably longer than the lower, resulting in an overbite when the jaws closed. In juveniles, the snout resembled that of a gharial; in adults, it became broader. The remains were found in the Gadoufaoua region of the Ténéré Desert, specifically in the Elrhaz Formation of the Tegama Group, dating from the late Aptian to early Albian stages of the Early Cretaceous, about 112 million years ago.
