The Pygurus marmonti Sand Dollar, commonly known as the Fossil Sea Urchin, is a member of the Echinoid family that thrived during the Jurassic Period, around 145 to 200 million years ago. Originating from Madagascar, these fossils display a beautiful five-ray star pattern and are often polished to reveal the fine details of their ancient form.

When alive, these echinoids lived on the sea floor, burrowing into soft sediments. After death, their shells were gradually buried by layers of sand and silt, which, over millions of years, transformed into rock and preserved their delicate patterns. The fossilization process captured the intricate structure of the sea urchin, creating natural molds that remain remarkably detailed.

Today, fossils of Pygurus marmonti are admired both for their scientific value and their aesthetic appeal, serving as timeless remnants of marine life from the Jurassic seas.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Madagascar do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
