During the Cretaceous period (145–66 million years ago), turtles were a diverse group of reptiles with varying sizes and habitats. Some species were small and terrestrial, while others were giant marine turtles adapted to life in ancient seas.
Two notable examples from this period are Archelon and Protostega. Archelon, one of the largest sea turtles ever, lived in the Late Cretaceous shallow seas that once covered parts of North America, including Wyoming, with a shell reaching up to four meters (13 feet). Similarly, Protostega, another massive marine turtle, likely fed on jellyfish and soft-bodied prey, highlighting the evolutionary diversity of Cretaceous turtles.
