During the Cretaceous period (145–66 million years ago), turtles were already a highly diverse group of reptiles. Recognized for their bony shells, turtles of this era occupied a wide range of habitats, from terrestrial environments to ancient oceans. Fossil evidence shows that Cretaceous turtles varied in size, shape, and lifestyle, with some species being small and land-dwelling, while others were enormous aquatic turtles.

Two of the most remarkable Cretaceous sea turtles are Archelon and Protostega. Archelon, one of the largest sea turtles ever known, lived in the Late Cretaceous shallow seas of North America, reaching up to four meters (13 feet) in shell length and fully adapted to a marine lifestyle. Similarly, Protostega was a giant sea turtle of comparable size, likely feeding on jellyfish and other soft-bodied marine organisms, showcasing the evolutionary diversity of prehistoric marine turtles.
