During the Cretaceous period (145–66 million years ago), turtles were already a diverse and evolving group of reptiles. Recognizable by their bony shells, these ancient turtles occupied a variety of habitats. Some species were small and terrestrial, while others were large aquatic turtles adapted to life in the oceans.

Two of the most remarkable Cretaceous sea turtles are Archelon and Protostega. Archelon, one of the largest sea turtles ever discovered, lived in the Late Cretaceous shallow seas of North America and had a shell reaching up to four meters (13 feet), making it perfectly adapted to a marine lifestyle. Similarly, Protostega, another giant sea turtle, likely fed on jellyfish and soft-bodied marine animals, highlighting the diversity and evolution of prehistoric marine turtles.
