During the Cretaceous period, which spanned roughly 145 to 66 million years ago, turtles already represented a diverse group of reptiles that had been evolving for millions of years. Turtles are known for their bony shell, serving as protection for their bodies. Fossil records show that during this time, turtles varied significantly in size and preferred habitats. Some were small and terrestrial, while others were large aquatic species.

A prominent example from this era is the Archelon, one of the largest sea turtles ever known. It lived in the Late Cretaceous period and inhabited shallow seas across parts of North America. Archelon's shell could reach up to four meters (13 feet) long and was well-suited for marine life.

Another notable Cretaceous turtle is Protostega, also a giant sea turtle from the Late Cretaceous. Its shell was similar in size to Archelon, and it probably fed on jellyfish and other soft-bodied marine creatures.
