Corythosaurus was a plant-eating “duck-billed” dinosaur that lived during the Upper Cretaceous Period, around 80 to 74 million years ago. This places it in the Campanian stage of the Mesozoic Era. These dinosaurs are well known for their specialized jaws that held hundreds of tiny, interlocking teeth, perfect for grinding up vegetation.

A standout feature of Corythosaurus was the large, helmet-shaped crest on top of its head. This crest contained part of the nasal passage, and scientists think it may have been used to create loud, resonating sounds for communication or display. Corythosaurus also had a long, muscular tail and could weigh between three and five tons when fully grown.

The first fossils of this dinosaur were uncovered in the Judith River Formation, a fossil-rich area that stretches from Alberta, Canada, into Montana, USA. Corythosaurus was officially named and described in 1914.
