The Pygurus marmonti Sand Dollar, commonly known as the Fossil Sea Urchin, belongs to the Echinoid family and lived during the Jurassic Period, around 145–200 million years ago. Distinguished by its graceful five-ray star pattern, this species once inhabited the sandy sea floors of ancient oceans.

Fossils of Pygurus marmonti are often found in Madagascar, where natural preservation and polishing reveal their intricate structure and symmetry. These fossils formed as the sea urchins were gradually buried beneath layers of sediment, which over millions of years transformed into stone, creating a lasting imprint of the original creature.

Highly valued by both collectors and scientists, these fossils not only showcase the beauty of prehistoric marine life but also offer a glimpse into the rich evolutionary history of Earth’s oceans.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Madagascar do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
