Tetragramma marticense sea urchins are marine invertebrates belonging to a group that now inhabits nearly every major marine environment—from the poles to the equator, and from shallow intertidal zones to ocean depths exceeding 5,000 meters. There are about 800 living species, and the group boasts a rich fossil record extending back approximately 450 million years to the Late Ordovician Period.
Commonly referred to as “sea biscuits,” the name echinoid derives from the Latin word meaning “pickle.” When alive, these sea urchins were covered with movable spines that provided both protection from predators and assistance in movement across the seafloor.
