The Pygurus marmonti Sand Dollar, also known as the Fossil Sea Urchin, belongs to the Echinoid family. It lived during the Jurassic Period, approximately 145 to 200 million years ago, and is easily recognized by its distinctive five-ray star pattern. This specimen from Madagascar has been carefully polished on one side to highlight its natural beauty.

Fossil Sand Dollars from Madagascar are impressions or molds of ancient sea urchins that once inhabited the ocean floor sediments. Over time, these organisms were buried by layers of sand, silt, and clay, which gradually hardened into sedimentary rock such as limestone or shale. As the organic material decayed, the surrounding sediments preserved the animal’s shape, forming a detailed cast of the original structure.

Today, Pygurus marmonti fossils are highly prized by collectors and paleontologists alike for their intricate design and insight into marine life from Earth’s distant past.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Madagascar do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
