The Pygurus marmonti Sand Dollar, often referred to as the Fossil Sea Urchin, belongs to the echinoid family and dates back to the Jurassic Period, around 145–200 million years ago. This species is recognized for its distinct five-pointed star pattern, a hallmark of its intricate internal structure. Fossil specimens from Madagascar, such as this one, have often been naturally polished over time or gently refined to highlight their remarkable detail and symmetry.

When alive, these sea urchins inhabited shallow marine environments, burrowing into soft ocean sediments. Upon death, their hard shells—called tests—became buried under layers of sediment, gradually fossilizing through mineral replacement and compression. The result is a beautifully preserved imprint of ancient marine life, capturing both the scientific and aesthetic wonder of the prehistoric oceans.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:

Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Madagascar do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
