The Pygurus marmonti Sand Dollar (Fossil Sea Urchin) belongs to the Echinoid family and lived during the Jurassic Period, around 145 to 200 million years ago. It is easily recognized by its distinct five-ray star pattern. This specimen from Madagascar has been polished to reveal its natural detail and symmetry.
Fossil Sand Dollars, such as Pygurus marmonti, are impressions or molds of ancient sea urchins that once inhabited sandy ocean floors. After death, their remains were buried by layers of sand, silt, and clay. Over millions of years, pressure and chemical reactions transformed these sediments into rock, leaving behind a detailed cast of the original structure.
Highly valued by collectors and paleontologists alike, these fossils capture both the beauty and the geological history of ancient marine environments.

Please be aware of the nature of fossils:
Being buried under the ground for millions of years under tons of pressure tends to be rough. No fossil comes out of the ground whole and perfect. Most fossils have undergone some restoration, while others are altered by man simply to enhance their presentation in different ways. The workers in Madagascar do a very professional job of unearthing and preserving these natural treasures; however, natural cracks are visible on the surface. These are part of the natural beauty of the fossil and are not considered defects.
