Name: Camarasaurus
Diet: Herbivore
Size: 18 meters in length
Camarasaurus was a large herbivorous sauropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic Period (145–155 million years ago). Measuring around 18 meters in length and weighing approximately 25 tons, Camarasaurus was smaller than other sauropods like diplodocids and brachiosaurs, yet it remained one of the dominant herbivores of its ecosystem.
This Jurassic dinosaur had a robust body, including strong legs, a thick tail, and a thick neck, along with a rounded snub-nosed skull. Its spoon-shaped, chisellike teeth were perfectly adapted for eating plants, allowing Camarasaurus to efficiently browse foliage in forests and floodplains. Adult Camarasaurus were generally too large to be targeted by predators, though Allosaurus may have preyed on juveniles.
Distinctive features of Camarasaurus include shorter necks and tails, a snub-nosed skull, and nostrils positioned in front of the eyes, unlike brachiosaurs (nostrils above the eyes) or diplodocids (nostrils at the tip of the snout). These traits make Camarasaurus one of the most easily recognizable Late Jurassic sauropods.
Camarasaurus remains a well-known herbivorous dinosaur in paleontology, highlighting the diversity of Jurassic sauropods and their adaptations for survival in a world shared with massive predators and giant herbivores.
