Carcharodontosaurus was one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs to ever walk the planet, dominating Northern Africa during the Late Cretaceous period approximately 95–100 million years ago. This enormous theropod dinosaur belonged to the carcharodontosaurid family, a group of giant meat-eating predators known for their long skulls and razor-sharp teeth. Growing up to 12 meters in length and weighing around 7 tonnes, Carcharodontosaurus combined size, agility, and powerful jaws to become a true apex predator of its environment.
Its name, meaning “shark-toothed lizard,” refers to the long, serrated teeth that lined its massive jaws, perfectly adapted for slicing through flesh rather than crushing bone. Unlike some other giant predators, Carcharodontosaurus possessed relatively strong forelimbs with three curved claws, likely used to grasp prey during hunts. Paleontologists believe this giant African dinosaur targeted large herbivores, including juvenile sauropods, maintaining balance in prehistoric ecosystems. Today, Carcharodontosaurus remains one of the most famous giant theropods in paleontology, admired for its size, fearsome appearance, and important role in understanding the evolution of large carnivorous dinosaurs.
