Late Cretaceous through to the Eocene, 100 million to 50 million years ago

Commonly known as the Saber-toothed herring, Enchodus is phylogenetically closer to modern Salmon. Its teeth are specialized for seizing small, slippery prey such as fish and cephalopods like squid, anchored in a mouth characterized by a wide gape. These morphological traits indicate that although the dentition was highly effective for prey capture, it could not tear off smaller flesh fragments. Consequently, after impaling prey with its fangs, Enchodus likely employed rapid cycles of jaw opening and closing to manipulate and consume its captured prey efficiently.
